How to write rap bars from an idea

Describe a scene or conflict. Choose a rap style and rhyme feel. Select Verse and 4, 8 or 16 bars for a verse draft. Read it over your beat, then shorten crowded lines or change a rhyme in the editor.

Choose 4, 8 or 16 bars

4 bars
Try one image or punchline. Four bars give you a short draft to read over a beat and revise.
8 bars
Develop a moment. Set the scene, introduce a problem and finish with a turn in the last few bars.
16 bars
Build a verse with room for a story. Give each group of four bars a job: scene, conflict, response and payoff.

Choose Verse to use the selected length. Choose Chorus for a hook, or Full song for verses and a chorus. Read the draft over your beat to find where each line lands.

Choose how your rap lines rhyme

End rhyme

I spread the copper wire beneath the light And tuned the little radio through the night

“Light” and “night” rhyme at the ends of the lines. Choose End rhyme when you want a repeating sound at each line ending.

Internal rhyme

A bright light falls on the wires I twist

“Bright” and “light” rhyme inside the line. Choose Internal rhyme to place rhyming words within your bars.

Choose Loose when the story matters more than a repeating rhyme pattern. Read it aloud and keep the phrases that fit your voice.

Can I generate freestyle rap lyrics?

Choose Freestyle in Rap style. Give it a topic, such as a late shift or a first win. Generate a verse, then practice the bars aloud and change words to fit your flow.

The prompt

Building my first radio at a kitchen table. Copper wire, loose screws and a borrowed soldering iron.

Freestyle · Confident · Verse · 4 bars · End rhyme · Clean

Generated verse

Copper spread across the kitchen table, spooled-out cable, loose screws in a jar with a crooked, hand-drawn label, borrowed soldering iron humming while my grip stayed stable, then a voice broke through the static — first build, I was able.

Make the verse fit your flow

Tap the beat and read your verse aloud. If a line feels crowded, select it in the editor and ask for fewer words. Keep the image and ending sound you like. Here is an edit to the third line above:

Original line
borrowed soldering iron humming while my grip stayed stable,
One way to shorten it
Borrowed iron in my hand, I kept it stable,
